Each year one of the things I do (like a New Year's resolution) is picking a genre of music that I don't usually listen to and checking it out.
I don't make an exhaustive deep dive of the whole genre, but I try to hear enough to have a sense of what's going on in that genre, know which sub genres I like and which ones I don't like, and hopefully find a few tracks that stand out to me. Though I'm always going to be missing quite a bit this is a not comprehensive by any means.
For my last big project, I checked out jazz and my big find was Sidney Bechet.
This year I think that I will probably check out techno ( or electronic more broadly).
Google tells me there are some good techno review websites with lists of top artists, top tracks, and top mix cds which should provide a useful starting point as I explore the techno space. I'm going to use this venue to take notes on songs, artists, albums, and other content that strikes my fancy.
